Not knowing their place in a herd can make a horse very anxious. If you’re introducing a new horse to an established herd, there’s usually some drama before they figure out where they stand.
Once they’re settled then everyone is content. If horses are testing each other, it's because they’re fulfilling their role in the herd. Everyone has natural gifts that influence their behaviors. A herd actually needs a little bit of healthy conflict between these roles to meet all of their needs.
Too much of the same type of herd member will leave them vulnerable.
